![]() On any given warm and sunny afternoon, whether you're deer hunting deep in the Ozark hardwoods or picnicking in an eastern Oklahoma campground, you are sure to hear the contented chirps of one of our most endearing watchable wildlife species - the Eastern chipmunk. What is the difference in appearance between a chipmunk and squirrel Chipmunks have striped backs while squirrels do not. Squirrels are typically about 10-20 inches long with a 5-10 inch tail. They prefer the edges of woodlands and occasionally climb trees to. What is the difference in size between a chipmunk and squirrel Chipmunks are typically about 6-8 inches long with a 3-4 inch tail. Instinctively, these rodents regularly store food within their burrows, which helps sustain this species at all times. Chipmunks are active during the day year-round, scurrying with their tails up in the air. Usually, chipmunks are smaller than ground squirrels, which range from 6 to 12 inches in length. Chipmunks have distinct rounded and erect ears, while squirrels have shorter and more unnoticeable ones. With a body 5-6 inches long and a tail thats 3-4 inches long, chipmunks are about 1/3 the size of an Eastern Gray Squirrel. ![]() The only difference is that a chipmunk consumes smaller plants. The Eastern chipmunk subsists on small nuts, weed seeds and small fruit, but also on a considerable number of insects. Both chipmunks and ground squirrels have similar food habits. A chipmunk also is noticeably smaller, it ears are more prominent, and its tail is less bushy than that of the ground squirrel. That is to say, the chipmunk is small and cute, like a little mouse, while the squirrel is larger and obviously less cute since you don’t see any of them running around with bright red sweaters annoying people named Dave. The ground squirrel only bears lines on the midsection of its back. However, they are in fact two difference species, with the squirrel basically being the rat to a chipmunk’s mouse. Chipmunks are part of the ground squirrel family, while squirrels are part of the tree squirrel family. The lines on a chipmunk extend the entire length of the body - from nose to tail. Yet several characteristics set these two species apart. ![]() What do chipmunks eat Chipmunks are omnivores so their diet consists of insects nuts berries and seeds. When filled to capacity, each pouch can expand almost as large as the animal's head.
